FAQ

Common questions

What actually moves the XAU/USD price?

Gold responds mainly to real interest rates, the US dollar, inflation expectations and demand for safe assets. When yields on inflation-protected bonds fall, gold usually becomes more attractive, and a stronger dollar tends to weigh on it. Central bank buying and physical demand add a slower underlying pull.

Why is gold quoted in dollars when I am trading from Kenya?

XAU/USD is priced in US dollars because the global gold market settles in dollars, so your profit and loss is calculated in dollars. Your broker then converts to whatever your account currency is. That means the KSh/USD rate affects what you finally receive, on top of the gold move itself.

At around 4275.0, what does a one-dollar move mean in money?

A one-dollar move on XAU/USD is 100 pips, because one pip is 0.01. On a 0.10-lot position (10 oz) that is about $10 before costs, and on a 1.00 lot (100 oz) it is about $100. Convert to KSh at the prevailing rate to see it in local terms.

Is gold more volatile than the currency pairs I might know?

Gold can move a great deal in a session, and its daily range often exceeds that of major currency pairs, so a stop that looks reasonable on EUR/USD may be far too tight on XAU/USD. Volatility also clusters around US data releases, when spreads and slippage can widen. Size for the range you expect.

Does the gold market ever close?

Spot gold trades roughly around the clock from Monday to Friday, following the major financial centres, and it pauses over the weekend. Liquidity is not uniform through those hours, so the same order can behave very differently at different times. Check the trading hours page for the local timing.
